move to Valencia – Sept 22

Sep 22, 2008 Published under move to Valencia

For the last time in a while I hope I packed my suitcase once again. Well packed… more like throwing it all in. Paid the equivalent of about one month rent and headed to Amparo’s casita.

Later on Amparo also came and we went to the bank to open an account. Normally that is only possible after you have received the NIE number, a kind of social security number, but Spain also seems to work with guanxi, so with the promise that I would go back to the bank as soon as I have this number I left with a brand new bank account.

Of course we had a cup of coffee and then she left me, because she had a busy day.

Some things I found out about coffee. Un solo is an espresso and caf‚àö¬© con leche is an espresso with milk (half-half) served in a small glass. Then there is caf‚àö¬© Americano, which is ‘normal’ cup of coffee, still pretty strong though. There is also caf‚àö¬© Cortado, which is a solo with a little bit of milk and caf‚àö¬© del Tiempo is a solo which is served with a separate glass with icecubes and a slice of lemon. You pour this in the glass and have your own ice-coffee for the hot summer days.

I went to the supermercado, which is literally next door, and bought all kinds of groceries for the first night cooking in my new home :P

Piet!!! How nice, it sounds that you have settled in well! Pam also sent me pictures of your boat trip with them, so it does seem that you also had a great time before moving to Spain. I was so impressed to hear that you already found an apartment when I spoke to Mia the other day, well done, that fast! But of course I know that was your plan. How did the first night of cooking turn out? And how did your own guangxi develop lately in Spain? Do you have langtuage classes already?

Here all is well, my brother and father are here right now. Was home in Germany for 10 days, to bury my grandmother and of course also to see friends. Despite the sad occasion it was nice to be at home. Back here Julian and I are very busy with entertaining visitors, planning for our next move (still not sure where to…) and catching up. Tonight we are doing a quiet evening with Annies, while I am sending the familiy to Lao Shi Tea House.

All the best to you, good luck with everything!! xxx Kathi
